The pretzel, triple sweetheart, and window

When it comes to swing dancing some of the top moves to learn include the pretzel, the triple sweetheart and the window.

Swing dancing is all about the experience and all about learning something new. To do this, lets start with a few moves that are important to learn.

1. The pretzel

For many of my swing dancing friends, they often refer to the pretzel as and underated move. It is a simple move, but it is not overused, in fact, it is rarely used.

It is a move that involves creating loops around you and your partner. My friends at Roundup Swing in Springville have said, "the pretzel is such a fun move and I honestly wish more people would do it." There is so much fun and variety that it can add to a dance.

2. The triple sweetheart

The triple sweetheart is one of the most commonly used swing moves. It is also a move that is commonly changed to add variety because of the different dance styles.

This move is done in three steps: the lean, the jump and the dip. Each couple who dances it does it differently. My friend Kallie, who drives all over to try out new swing places said, "I love the variety with the triple sweetheart. I love the kicks that you can add in and the fact that you can make it spicy."

3. The window

The last move that I think is really important to know is the window. A lot of beginner dancers feel stressed out when they see this one, but it is not as hard as one would expect.

The window includes spinning into a position where you are looking at your partner. As shared by the founder of Peak Nights, "the window is all about connecting with and having fun with your partner."

Whether it is learning a new move, or teaching someone else how to do it, the best way to enjoy any dance is to have fun and make it your own. As my swing posse would put it,"swing makes me feel like I can be myself, like I'm not judged by others. You are surrounded by so many amazing people."

Because of the loving, caring environment, I would encourage anyone to give swing dancing a try. Be the person who is not sure what they are doing, the one who asks for help and is not afraid to look stupid. I promise you that as dancers, we look up to you so much because it takes so much courage to try something new. Just know that as you do ask and start to learn moves....you will become the person who gets asked.
